Recently, I posed a question that parents everywhere need to answer at some point in time: “What’s the youngest age you can leave kids home alone?“. We took calls and discussed it on the website and Facebook, and there were some interesting opinions shared in our conversations, so we put together a poll to see where Abilene stands on the subject. The results are in.
With the runoff election for Taylor County Sheriff coming on July 31st, there seems to be more and more undecided voters paying close attention to the race Incumbent Les Bruce and his challenger, Deputy Sheriff Ricky Bishop squared off on a televised debate earlier this week to send their message to Taylor County.
Many parents are faced with deciding when it’s okay to leave their child unattended for extended periods of time. Whether they are working while school is out, or need to run errands for a couple hours, it’s a dilemma most every parent is faced with as their child grows older.
If you’ve ever gone browsing the “all for sale” section of Abilene Craigslist, you may get totally lost in the variety of what all is for sale. My latest trip to the site had me finding some things I want to buy, some things I never knew existed, and some things I just thought were cool for some reason. So, I felt the need to share. Just in case you were in a buying mood. And hey, it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts!
Parents, we’ve come to the point in the year where it’s time to start preparing the kids for another school year. Of course that means buying clothes, shoes, and school supplies. But there’s one important preparation that won’t allow kids into school unless it’s taken care of: making sure their immunization records are up to date.
Summer is here, and the kids are out of school. As working parents know, it’s difficult to take the whole summer off in order to stay home with a child. So we’re faced with finding other options. Some parents, enrolling their child in daycare. Others will have children stay with a relative or friend. But there are some parents who don’t have those options, and are in the tough situation where they have to decide whether or not to let their kid stay home alone.
If you hold a fascination for science fiction, comic books, UFO’s and the T.V. shows and movies spawned from them, don’t miss the Galaxy Ranger Fan Days Convention. It’s coming to the Abilene Civic Center on Saturday and Sunday, September 29th and 30th. The event, which will benefit the Ben Richey Boys Ranch and our military heroes, will feature guest speaker Dennis Balthasar, and appearances from several movie and television stars, as well as comic book artists and writers.
Politics, sports, waiting at the doctor’s office, technology, having your order screwed up at the drive-thru. Whatever the case, we all have things that frustrate us on a regular – if not daily – basis. Some people, like former tennis star John McEnroe and former basketball coach Bobby Knight, have made themselves famous as much for venting their frustrations as they have for their respective talents.
A few days ago, we asked if you were superstitious and thought that Friday the 13th really brings people bad luck. Abilene is pretty split on whether or not they should stay home and hide, or just go about their daily routine. But the final poll results are in.
Mike Rowe has made it a career of spending a day in the life of regular folks who just happen to have some of the most difficult, nasty, disgusting jobs on the planet. He hosts the Discovery Channel television series “Dirty Jobs”, and gives us all a friendly reminder that our job could be worse (or at least dirtier). While most of the workers that show Rowe how to do their job seem to enjoywhat they do, lots of us have had work that we didn’t care for.
CarWalk, a popular annual ArtWalk event, is ready to roll into downtown Abilene this evening. After being rescheduled due to inclement weather in March, the forecast is ideal for displaying these works of art on wheels.
This week we’ve seen a new Chick-Fil-A open on the north side of Abilene. And soon, there will be a new option for breakfast and lunch dining coming to the south side later this month. The Flipping Egg will officially open its doors on July 20th on South Danville, just north of Buffalo Gap Road between Dentures Plus and the FedEx Office store.
