Watch Trivium’s Matt Heafy Cover Red Hot Chili Peppers + Atreyu
The clocks rolled back this weekend, giving us all an extra hour to be productive, and Matt Heafy definitely took advantage of the time shift. Keeping his penchant for covering songs by the bands he loves at the forefront, the Trivium frontman took on a song by Red Hot Chili Peppers and another track closer to his metalcore roots in Atreyu.
Perhaps inspired by the Chili Peppers going Cloak & Dagger as part of a Halloween celebration last week, Heafy did his own version of the band's 1992 single "Suck My Kiss" on Sunday (Nov. 4), replete with guttural growls that brought a whole new dimension to the SoCal funkster's hit. Check out the video above to see just how far he took it.
The day before, Heafy paid it forward by delivering an acoustic cover of Atreyu's hard-charging 2007 track "Blow," which can be viewed below. Atreyu's drummer/singer Brandon Saller stepped up to the plate this past Friday (Nov. 2) to assist Trivium in the wake of Heafy having to leave the band's headlining tour to be with his pregnant wife. Light the Torch and former Killswitch Engage singer Howard Jones, Avatar's Johannes Eckerström and YouTuber Jared Dines have also been lending a hand.
"This goes out to Brandon from Atreyu for stepping in to fill in for me on a few songs in Anaheim at the Trivium show!" Heafy wrote in the description of the video, which can be viewed below. "Brandon has been one of my all-time favorite singers, and Atreyu is one of my all-time favorite bands. Thank you again Brandon!"
Heafy has been pulling out all sorts of surprises in recent months, busting out such classics as a cover of Celine Dion's smash "My Heart Will Go On," 'NSync's "Tearin' Up My Heart" and Toto's "Africa" populating his his YouTube channel in recent weeks.
As aforementioned, Heafy left the tour last week. He revealed the news in a video statement, saying, "I just had to fly back unexpectedly home to Orlando. As you know, my wife and I are expecting twins, and as you also know [with] pregnancy, there are no definitive answers on when things are happening. Especially when it's two."
