After the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration successfully captured the world's first image of a black hole, a chang.org petition was launched to name it after late Soundgarden and Audioslave legend Chris Cornell. Now, the singer's former bandmate, Tom Morello, has thrown his support behind the idea.

The petition cited Cornell's massive influence and recognized "Black Hole Sun" as Soundgarden's biggest hit as it implored fans to sign their name in support of the cause. "I heard that. I think that would be really nice," Morello told Rock 105 WRXR. He added, "I don't know who you send that petition to, but I'd be happy to officially add my name to that… That seems absolutely appropriate."

As of press time, the petition had over 46,000 signatures and the numbers are steadily climbing toward the 50,000 signature goal. In the explanatory text, creator Giuliana Jarrin called upon "the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, NASA and all the astronomers and scientists involved in this discovery" to name the black hole after Cornell.

The petition will need at least 100,000 signatures to warrant a response from The White House.

In other news, Morello recently joined Scott Ian, Nuno Bettencourt and Game of Thrones television series creator D.B. Weiss and composer Ramin Djwadi to play the show's theme song on custom guitars inspired by the popular program. Watch footage of their performance here and check out the custom guitars too.
