Raider Red Gets a Twist

This isn’t your average nodding figurine. Raider Red is suited up in a black Tech jersey, standing on a turf-style base, with a few tortillas scattered at his feet. The real showstopper? He’s tossing a tortilla with his right hand, and yes, that tortilla actually bobbles. Rock on!

A Tradition Born in Lubbock, Texas

The tortilla toss has been part of Texas Tech football since the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. While the origin is debated, one theory points to students swapping fountain drink lids for tortillas when the lids disappeared from concessions.

Another credits a 1992 ESPN commentator who joked that Lubbock had “nothing but Texas Tech football and a tortilla factory.” Either way, the tradition stuck and has become one of the most recognizable in college sports.

Why Fans Are Fired Up

Even with the Big 12 cracking down on objects tossed onto the field, this bobblehead keeps the spirit alive. As CEO Phil Sklar of the Bobblehead Hall of Fame says, “The Tortilla Toss at Texas Tech has been one of the most quirky and tastiest traditions in college sports.”

For Tech fans, this isn’t just a collectible, it’s a piece of gameday culture. Now, who wants a tortilla?

Just another one of those things we love in Texas.
