Stone Temple Pilots will be showcasing a whole new side of them come 2020. Their newly announced album Perdida, the second with vocalist Jeff Gutt, is due for release on Feb. 7, which will be followed by an acoustic tour. Listen to the first single "Fare Thee Well" below.

The album will be a step back from their classic energetic, alt-rock sound. It will be mostly acoustic, and was recorded on vintage instruments, according to Rolling Stone. Bassist Robert DeLeo said this is the type of album the band had been wanting to make for a while. "Most of our songs start acoustically and we felt these would come across in the most genuine way if we kept them that way," he added.

"Perdida" translates to "loss" in Spanish, and Gutt explained that many of the songs revolve around emotional turmoil, as he had been reflecting upon some hardships in his life while writing its lyrics. "I was trying to be vulnerable and that’s a scary thing to do, but it’s also kind of comfortable," he admitted.

One of the tracks, "I Didn't Know the Time," deals with the loss of two of the band's singers — original frontman Scott Weiland in 2015, and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington in 2017, who had replaced Weiland when he parted ways from the band. "I didn’t know Scott,” Gutt explained. “But I’d known Chester since 2000, so there was some reminiscing about him on that song. That’s really the only time on the album. The rest was all ex-girlfriends and all that.”

The tour, titled An Evening With Stone Temple Pilots, will span across clubs throughout the U.S., allowing for a more intimate mood to match the songs. According to DeLeo, there will be an additional guitar player, some other string players and a keyboardist on board with the rockers.
