Abilene to Spray for Mosquitoes After West Nile Virus Found in Texas
No, those are not Teradactyls flying around in Texas. Those are just our normal mosquitoes buzzin' the Lone Star State. However, with mosquitoes come problems. The City of Abilene is firing up the spray trucks after several mosquitoes in town tested positive for West Nile virus, according to Big Country Homepage.
Officials say the spraying will use EPA-approved insecticides, applied by licensed crews, aiming to reduce the mosquito population and lower the risk of the virus spreading to people.
When Will The City of Abilene Spray for Mosquitoes?
The spraying is scheduled for the evenings of August 19–21, focusing on areas near North Pioneer Drive (1300 block), Zoo Lane (2000 block), and Walnut Street (600 block).

Why the City of Abilene is Stepping In
When mosquitoes test positive for West Nile, it’s a red flag that the disease could make its way into the human population. Most cases are mild, but some can be serious, and that’s not a gamble anyone wants to take. Spraying now helps get ahead of the problem before it turns into a bigger one.
What You Can Do
Abilene residents can help by:
- Staying indoors during spraying hours.
- Wear long sleeves and pants if you’re outside.
- Using insect repellent with DEET.
- Drain any standing water around your home where mosquitoes love to breed.
