This week's Badass of the Week if a Texan who came up from rough beginnings to become an American hero. Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez stepped on a landmine during the Vietnam war and was told by doctors he'd never walk again. Through perseverance and determination, he was able to defy the odds and walk out of a hospital. From there, he went back into the Vietnam war to spend what historians call "6 hours in hell," surrounded by enemy soldiers. After many moments where his situation seemed hopeless, he was able to save his fellow soldiers and extract the sensitive intel that couldn't fall into enemy hands.

After his ordeal, medics believed him to be dead, so badly wounded from the battle but he mustered up the strength to spit in the face of a doctor when he was trying to zip up Benavidez's body bag. His commander put him in to receive the Distinguished Service Cross, for fear he wouldn't survive long enough to receive the Medal of Honor but he did. He received the Medal of Honor from President Ronald Reagan on February 24th, 1981. Find out more about aster Sergeant Roy Benavidez int he video above.
