Abilene ISD Homeless Liaison Explains Why Coats for Kids Matters More This Year
As winter settles in here in Texas, our Coats for Kids drive makes sure the kids who have nothing to keep warm don’t get left out in the cold.
Helping Our Homeless Students: A Conversation With AISD’s Darrin Cox
This week on The Afternoon Buzz, I sat down with Darrin Cox, the Homeless Liaison for Abilene ISD, to help kick off our annual Coats for Kids coat drive. I’ve worked with Darrin for several years, and am amazed at what he does for our kids in the community. There are students in our own community facing challenges that most adults would struggle with.

Please take a listen to the interview below, where we talk about why this matters even more this year.
Why Coats for Kids Matters Even More Right Now
Every winter, we ask Abilene to help us collect new or gently used coats to ensure AISD students stay warm. It may seem small, but warmth changes everything for a kid trying to get through the school day.
This year, with the government shutdown, support systems that many families depend on are delayed or strained. That impact is real. It means that something like a warm coat can go from helpful to critical.
Darrin’s Work and Heart
Darrin works daily with students in Abilene, Texas, who are homeless or experiencing unstable living situations, kids who might be staying in motels, shelters, with family friends, or anywhere they can. He makes sure these kids feel human, not forgotten.
