It’s been said, “the mosquitoes in Texas are the size chihuahuas” unlike the dog their bite is worse than their bark. Recently, Texas Tech researchers blamed complacency and apathy for the recent outbreak of West Nile virus in the United States. Several cases were reported right here in the Lone star State and nationwide there has been 66 fatalities related to West Nile. “The virus is here and it appears it may have mutated” says Steve Presley a disease researcher at the Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
I missed out on the last ‘Tabernacle Experience’ that came to my church earlier this year. It’s funny though, how sometimes when you say something like “wow, we should have gone, okay the next time it comes to town we are so there”. Guess what? The Tabernacle Experience is coming to Abilene from September the 8th through the 18th. More than 100,000 people across the United States have taken in this life-size, interactive Tabernacle of Moses. Now Abilene and the Big Country will get the chance to experience this awesome live event too.
Chili Super Bowl XXXI is upon us this Labor Day weekend. All the fun and festivities are taking place at the old settlers camp grounds in beautiful, downtown Buffalo Gap, Texas America. If you have never attended, you’re in for a real treat, (some words of advise) come hungry, wear old comfortable shoes. Bring the kids cause they’re welcomed too.
In the movie “Limitless” Eddie Morra is an aspiring author that’s suffering from writer’s block, but his life changes instantly when an friend introduces him to a little pill called NZT. Eddie’s brain is transformed into a powerful human super-computer. This pill gives him super mental abilities, enabling him to read and recall millions of bits of information instantly. NZT is fictional, however Adderall is the real deal. And both have serious side-effects.
Every year, at Boys Ranch Chili (Super) Bowl time, my daughters start asking “dad, are you cooking some of your award winning chili?” The answer is always “yes”, because it’s tradition. Like Christmas trees and Easter egg hunts, some things never change. Labor Day weekend is designated “Chili Cook Off Weekend” nothing else goes better with Labor Day than a bowl of my ‘Dragon’s Breath Chili’.
The Abilene Association of Realtors (AAOR) and the Salvation Army say they are “extremely happy with the number of Abilene area residents that participated in the Walk With Pride event”. Shanda Tijerina the Public Relations Chairwoman for the Association says, “627 Children received brand new shoes and socks in time for for back to school”.
The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) has released the number of dealers in the U.S. There are now just over 129,800 BATF licensed dealers, according to the latest Bureau statistics as of August 1st, 2012, that’s an increase of 3,200 more gun dealers in America. Of those, 51,438 are retail gun and/or sporting goods stores, just over 7,350 are pawn shops and 61,560 are individual dealers, curators and/or collectors with the remaining licenses issued to manufacturers and importers. The number of gun owners has increased too.
The Callahan County 4-h shooting sports program, will be putting on a five stand shoot, Saturday, September the 8th at the Callahan County 4-H range. You can put your team together or shoot individually. The 4-H club will be offering a “Team 5-Stand”, “Individual 5-Stand” and “Trap”. The entry fees vary depending on how you choose to shoot.
The Babes with Bullets (BwB) shooting camp that travels across the United States is coming to Texas in October. The BwB camp is a three day firearms training program for women who have little or no handgun experience. The BwB ‘combo camp’ offers women AR-15 rifle training too. Every camp is taught by women who are national and world firearms champions. The next Babes with Bullets camp will be in Amarillo and runs October 5th thru the 8th.
The Geek Art Contest was held during August Art Walk at the Center For Contemporary Arts (CCA) in downtown Abilene. First off what is “Geek Art?” It’s were computer science related students from TSTC submitted their version of art using computer components and parts. That said, the judges recently announced who the Geek Art winners and all the other participants in the contest. The Geek Art will remain on display through the end of the month at CCA.
The Cultural Affairs Council (CAC), Children’s Performing Arts Series (CPAS), just announced the line up for 2012-2013, it looks like fun for everyone. First in line is, Sleeping Beauty scheduled for Sunday, October 14th, 2012. John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean and Pinkalicious, The Musical both are scheduled in 2013. The best part is seasons passes just became available.
Trinity Baptist Church youth Pastor Joseph Plagge says they’re planning one last bash before school starts. The event is will take place at Trinity Baptist Church located at 871 Woodlawn Drive. It is free and open to children ages 3 years old thru 5th grade. Plagge says “this will also be a perfect opportunity to introduce neighborhood children to AWANA.”
