Using NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information Comparative Climatic Dataset, Abilene fell out of the top 11 by recording a 10.9 wind speed average compared to the 11.9 average from a year ago.

If you're from Abilene, you're probably thinking that's impossible because of how windy it seems on any given day. Heck, sometimes the wind is so bad that I see many people, including me, holding their fists in the air and cursing it. Be honest, you know you've done that.

The 2023 list does highlight 3 Texas towns, with one of them being in the top two. Check out the list below.

Windiest Cities in the United States

As you can see, The Windy City (Chicago) was not included in the top 11. There are conflicting stories about how that Chicago got that name. Obviously, the weather may have had to do with it, but I've also heard that the name was derived from the fact that politicians were "full of hot air". Regardless, Chicago is not on this list.

What is the highest wind speed recorded in the U.S.?

According to AccuWeather, the highest wind speed ever recorded was on top of Mount Washington on April 12, 1934. That day a 231 mph gust of wind swept across the highest peak in the Northeast.
