I've lived in Abilene long enough to know that this city isn't what it used to be. And in many ways, that's a good thing. New businesses, new opportunities, and massive developments like the data centers are bringing jobs and money into the Big Country.

But I've got to ask: Are we keeping up with all this growth?

A Tragic Shooting Raises Bigger Questions

Monday morning, I read a heartbreaking story about a 39-year-old Georgia man, reportedly working at one of our data centers, who was shot and killed following a disturbance at an Abilene bar.

First and foremost, somebody lost their life. My thoughts are with his family, and I certainly don't want to speculate about what happened while police are investigating. But it got me thinking about how much Abilene is changing.

Is It Just Me, or Has Abilene Gotten Crazier?

Look, I'm not blaming the data center workers. Most of these folks are here to work hard, make money, and take care of their families. I welcome that.

But have you driven around Abilene lately? Holy crap! Maybe it's just me, but the traffic seems crazier, the aggressive driving seems worse, and sometimes I wonder what happened to our laid-back West Texas town.

Interestingly, according to the Abilene Police Department's crime statistics, reported violent crimes actually dropped from 546 in 2024 to 524 in 2025. Reported traffic crashes also declined.

That's encouraging, even if it doesn't always feel that way behind the wheel.

I love Abilene. I love seeing our city succeed, and I'm excited about the opportunities coming our way. But with growth comes responsibility. Are our roads, police, emergency services, and infrastructure ready for what lies ahead?

LOOK: Famous People From the Abilene Area

You might be surprised to know there are a ton of people from the Abilene area that became a household name. Heck, just talking athletes alone there are over 30 people that became famous from our neck of the woods.

A ton of these folks are athletes, but there are quite a few actors, musicians, and more who were able to get out of what I call "the black hole". I'm not saying that Abilene is bad, I'm simply saying that many people, including myself, have moved away only to come back. These famous people were able to punch their ticket into stardom, and not look back.
