I’ve always had a soft spot for our veterans, and here’s a way we can all step up in Texas. The West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) is looking for volunteer drivers to help local Veterans get to their medical appointments across West Texas. If you’ve got a valid driver’s license and a little extra time, this is a chance to make a huge difference.

Why Volunteer Drivers Matter

Many Veterans live in rural Texas areas where getting to a clinic isn’t as simple as hopping in a car. Moses Tijerina, Service Chief at WTVAHCS, says it best: volunteer drivers don’t just provide transportation, they provide access, dignity, and the reassurance that someone cares. Veterans from towns like Andrews, Snyder, Fort Stockton, and beyond rely on this service to keep their health on track.

What It Takes

The VA makes it easy. Volunteers drive government-provided vehicles, and all fuel and maintenance costs are covered. You’ll need a physical exam and a background check, but the VA handles the paperwork and the costs. Retired, semi-retired, or just looking to make a real impact? This is your lane.

Make an Impact

Becoming a volunteer driver is a tangible way to give back to those who gave so much for us. Every ride you give helps a Veteran get the care they’ve earned and strengthens our community at the same time.

If you’re ready to hit the road for a good cause in Texas, contact the WTVAHCS Public Affairs Office at WTVAHCSPublicAffairs@va.gov or call 432-263-7361 ext. 7136.

Let’s get our Veterans where they need to go, and show them that West Texas has their back.
