The City of Abilene is rolling out the spray trucks again, trying to take down our buzzing enemies before West Nile Virus gets a bigger grip on Texas. According to city officials, they’re targeting mosquito breeding sites and using treatments in areas with higher test results for the virus.

Is This Chemical Safe For Abilene Residents?

Now, before you imagine hazmat suits and a fog thick enough to rival a Metallica concert, the city says these sprays are targeted and EPA-approved. The goal? Knock down mosquito populations without knocking us out in the process.

Here Are The Hot Spot Targets In Abilene

  • Near Valentine Park in the 1300 block of Pioneer Drive
  • Near the Abilene Parks & Recreation Administration building in the 600 block of Walnut Street
  • Near the Environmental Recycling Center in the 2200 block of Oak Street
  • Near Fire Station 8 in the 5600 block of Buffalo Gap Road

How You Can Help Curb These Bloodsuckers

Of course, city crews can’t do it all. Mosquitoes are crafty, and they love nothing more than a good backyard puddle to raise their army. That’s where we come in. The biggest difference happens when everyone takes a little time to clear standing water, check gutters, and keep things dry.

So while Abilene sprays the hot spots, you can double down at home. Grab some repellent, light up those citronella candles, and maybe even plant a little lavender or basil to send the bugs packing.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about beating West Nile, it’s about finally enjoying your backyard without becoming the buffet.
