Starting Monday, September 22, 2025, Abilene is rolling out its first official paid parking lot downtown. The lot sits right by the DoubleTree by Hilton Abilene Downtown Convention Center, between North 5th and 6th on Cypress Street.

According to the City of Abilene, drivers will need to download the ParkMobile app to register, even if they’re just stopping by for a quick bite at Cypress Street Station.

The first two hours are free, but after that, here’s the damage:

  • 2–4 hours: $5
  • 4–6 hours: $9
  • 6–9 hours: $13
  • All day (9+ hours): $20

There’s also a three-day max, and if you leave your ride longer than that, expect a friendly visit from a towing service.

Parking in Abilene Was Already a Circus

Let’s be honest: parking in Abilene has always been a core memory for anyone who’s had to dodge a pickup truck parked diagonally across three spaces. There’s literally a Facebook page dedicated to bad parking in Abilene, and it stays busy. Adding an app, fees, and timers into the mix feels like inviting more chaos to the rodeo.

Good for the City… Or Just Another Headache?

On the plus side, the fees could help fund more downtown development and free up spaces for people actually spending time (and money) downtown.

On the downside, locals aren’t exactly lining up to pay for something they’ve gotten free forever. Whether this smooths out traffic or just adds fuel to the Facebook rant fires remains to be seen.
