Things are getting weird in this small Texas town west of Abilene. The tiny town of Tye has been dealing with staffing shortages for a while now, but this week it hit a whole new level as the entire public works crew has resigned, and now the city is pretty much running on fumes.

Wait...Public Works Is Gone?

Yep, as of May 27, public works services are officially on pause. So, if you’ve got a water emergency, you’ll need to call (325) 692-8588 and press the option for police dispatch. Yeah, that’s where they are now, calling the cops if your pipes burst. Crazy.

Water bills? Delayed. Meter readings? Not happening. Late fees and shut-offs? Thankfully, those are off the table for now, because nobody is around to do anything about it anyway.

A Mass Exodus In Tye Texas?

Unfortunately for Tye, this isn’t the first hit the city has taken. Back in December 2024, the mayor, two council members, and several firefighters all packed up and bolted, leaving the city with three council members, but at this point, is anyone showing up for work?

But Wait....There's More!

As if that wasn’t enough, the city also announced that Police Chief Mike Lively is retiring at the end of the month, and Code Enforcement Officer Cat Navarro has recently left, too. Man, if this were a game of Jenga, we’d be one block away from collapse.

Will Tye Become Uncorporated?

Look, we’re all rooting for Tye. But right now, it feels like the city is barely holding it together with duct tape and good intentions. No mayor, barely a council, City Hall shut down, public works vanished, and key roles dropping like flies. Even through it all, the folks who are holding it down do not think the city will become unincorporated.

That’s a hard pill to swallow for the folks in Tye. Maybe they can pull off an epic comeback? We’re pulling for ya, Tye!
