Memorial Day weekend in Texas is the unofficial kickoff to summer. The grills get fired up, the lakes fill up, and suddenly everybody starts planning road trips, patio hangs, and long weekends under the Texas sun.

But before anything else, honoring the brave men and women who gave their lives serving this country should always come first.

That’s what this holiday is truly about.

Once we take time to reflect and honor the fallen, Texas offers no shortage of ways to spend the long weekend. Around Abilene, there are plenty of local spots to relax, grab a cold drink, catch live music, or hit the road for a quick getaway.

And honestly, Texas road trips just hit different.

One of my favorite Texas cities has always been San Antonio. Between the River Walk, amazing food, and nonstop energy, it’s hard not to have a good time there during Memorial Day weekend.

I’ve also spent time down at South Padre Island, which is basically Texas beach chaos in the best possible way. Sun, sand, seafood, live music, and thousands of Texans all trying to relax at the exact same time.

And on a recent Hill Country trip, I stopped by Safari for the Soul, which turned out to be one of the most peaceful and relaxing spots I’ve visited in a long time.
