Another Fraud Alert In Texas As Sheriff Warns About Jury Duty Scam
A new scam is going around in Texas that targets folks summoned for jury duty, warranting a scam alert by local law enforcement.
New Texas Scam
Taylor County Sheriff, Ricky Bishop, took to social media and posted a video of the new scam. According to TCSO, the scam involves someone impersonating the sheriff's department, using their phone numbers and demanding money from folks who did not show up for jury duty.
“That is 100% a scam; no one from the sheriff’s office will be calling you for money if, for some reason, you don’t show up for jury duty or anything of that sort. Any type of phone call you get is 100% a scam, and please ignore it,” Bishop said.

Why Are There So Many Texas Scams?
It seems like we keep hearing about new scams almost daily in Texas. I can't tell you how many scam calls and texts I receive every single day. It gets to where I don't even want to answer calls from people I actually know. In fact, just last month, I was contacted by someone claiming to be my bank, using my bank's phone number. Once they asked me for money, I hung up on them. Then called my bank back, who confirmed that it was a scam.
Texans reported over $900 million in fraud in 2024 with over 80,000 reported cases of fraud, according to the Dallas Observer.
Who's At Fault?
I don't know how many times I've checked my phone number on the Do Not Call Registry, which is run by the Federal Trade Commission. It doesn't work. Never. Why even have it? I feel like it should be the carrier's responsibility to ensure that we, as consumers, get legitimate calls and not these scammy calls wanting to take all of our hard-earned money. I mean, we all pay a bunch of money to have secure calls and such, right?
Look Out For These Texas Scams
The Attorney General of Texas's website lists the signs that you should look out for when it comes to scams. If someone contacts you and wants your personal information, that's red flag number one that you are being scammed. Legitimate businesses and callers will never ask for personal information over the phone and will never ask for money from you. Stay safe out there!
