The Truth Is Out There: Over Half of Texas Believe In Ghosts
So here’s a fun (and slightly bone-chilling) fact: according to a new survey by Mad City, more than 65% of Americans believe in ghosts, and yep, Texans are right there with ‘em.
Do You Believe? Turns Out, Most Texans Do
Honestly, I figured that number would be lower for Texas. We’ve got plenty of skeptics here, but apparently, we’ve also got plenty of folks who think something’s going bump in the night—and it ain’t the armadillos.

The Spirit of the Nation
Nationwide, the Mad City survey found 68% of people believe houses can be haunted, while another 65% say ghosts are absolutely real. That means roughly two out of three people you know are open to the idea of sharing a mortgage with a phantom roommate. Heck yeah! Just don't drink my beer!
States like Tennessee and Louisiana top the list, but Texas isn’t far behind, probably thanks to our massive history, spooky old towns, and more than a few places that feel haunted.
Texas: Where the Ghosts Wear Boots
With over 900 documented haunted locations, Texas consistently ranks among the most haunted states in America. From the Driskill Hotel in Austin to the ghost lights of Marfa, and of course, Abilene’s own Swenson House, our ghosts have stories to tell and plenty of dusty roads to wander.
So, why do so many Texans believe? Maybe it’s our deep connection to history. Maybe it’s the creaky old houses. Or maybe we just love a good story told by flashlight. Whatever it is, one thing’s clear: if you’re in Texas and hear a door slam when nobody’s home… don’t worry too much.
