Candlelight Vigil in Abilene Honors Central Texas Flood Victims
In the wake of the devastating floods that struck Central Texas and the Hill Country earlier this month, our community is coming together to remember those lost and support the affected families.
A Tragic Event
Between July 4 and 7, 2025, Texas experienced catastrophic flooding due to heavy rains intensified by remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. The Guadalupe River rose rapidly, reaching unprecedented levels in Kerr County.

The disaster resulted in at least 129 confirmed deaths, with over 160 individuals still missing, making it one of the deadliest inland flooding events in U.S. history, according to The Texas Tribune.

Camp Mystic, a summer camp for girls along the Guadalupe River, was among the hardest-hit locations, with over two dozen fatalities reported. Absolutely devastating, and sad. I can't even imagine.

Mother Nature Not Done
As we continue recovery efforts, it's important to stay informed about the weather. Today, July 14, parts of Texas, including the Hill Country and Central Texas, remain under flood advisories due to saturated soils and ongoing rainfall.
However, a shift in weather patterns is expected this week. High pressure is building over the southern U.S., which will lower the chances of additional heavy rainfall. By midweek, we should start seeing more of a classic summer pattern and those brutal Texas temperatures.
