You know that feeling when you stumble across an old favorite spot in Texas with a lot of nostalgia, and you grasp the scary thought: what if it disappears? That’s exactly what’s happening in Abilene with Play Faire Park, as a fundraiser has been launched to help save it.

The Granddaughter’s Plea: Pain & Passion in Real Time

Recently, the granddaughter of a key figure behind Play Faire posted on Facebook, pouring her heart into the video. She pleaded not just as a descendant, but as someone who sees in the park more than steel and landscaping. We're talking memories, family, and community.

As of now, the campaign shows about $1,191 raised from 39 donors.

Why Play Faire Matters (Hint: It’s Not Just Golf)

  • Community anchor. PlayFaire isn’t just green turf and windmills; it’s where families gather, first dates fumble over rotating obstacles, kids laugh (sometimes in frustration), and local musicians get a stage.
  • Affordable fun. When alternative entertainment is often expensive, this park offers something simple, low-cost, and inclusive.
  • Cultural hub. They host events, concerts, festivals — you don’t need to hop into a bar to catch live music; you can do it with your family.
  • Legacy. This park has been part of Abilene’s story for decades. Letting it fade would be a loss not just of a business, but of memory, identity, and local pride.

A Little History to Remind Us What’s at Stake

Founded in 1947, Play Faire Park is one of Texas’s oldest continuously operated miniature golf courses. It’s been a landmark in Abilene for generations, offering families and friends a place to laugh, compete, and make memories under the West Texas sun.

The park’s origins go back to local recreation efforts after World War II, when the site supported a VFW plan designed to give returning soldiers and their families affordable entertainment. From the beginning, Play Faire has been more than just a golf course — it’s been a gathering space for the community.

In 1994, Chris “Doc” England purchased the park from the previous owner and set out to breathe new life into it. He added musical elements, refurbished the greens, and worked to create a unique atmosphere that went far beyond the typical miniature golf experience.

Under England’s leadership, Play Faire became a hub for concerts, themed events, and community gatherings. It survived years of ups and downs — neglect, changing trends, rumors of closure — but somehow, it always bounced back.

That resilience is thanks to people who believe in the park. But that legacy is fragile now, and we’re at risk of losing it if the community doesn’t step up once again.
