Downtown Abilene Is Getting a Major Makeover with a New Public Plaza
Downtown Abilene is finally getting a glow-up that doesn’t involve orange cones, jackhammers, or another overpriced latte joint. Nope, this time, we’re getting something actually cool: a shiny new Pedestrian Plaza right in the 100 block of Cypress Street.
$1.5 Million and a Mystery Donor
Thanks to a $1.5 million mystery donation (cue the dramatic music), this long-forgotten patch of downtown, once a sad, fenced-off crater where the old Abilene Reporter-News building used to sit, is being transformed into a vibrant public space.

Think shaded pavilions, an open green lawn, fancy water feature, and enough electrical outlets to make every food truck and local vendor drool.

"It was a space that had become blighted,” said Downtown Coordinator Kate Alvarez. “We knew we had to address it if we wanted the full vision of Cypress Street to feel cohesive and welcoming.” City of Abilene
More Than Just a Pretty Space
The plaza is part of the larger Cypress Street Improvement Project, which is still city-funded (so yes, your tax dollars are working too). But this plaza? Pure private generosity. You can picnic, browse art fairs, shop craft markets, or sit under some shade and judge people’s outfits, all while enjoying free air and the sweet smell of local progress.
When’s It Done?
Construction should wrap up sometime next year, with most of Cypress Street opening by the end of October. Trees and landscaping show up in December, and final lighting will shine bright in early 2026.
“We want it to be a beautiful, usable space,” Alvarez added. “And because the funding was private, the community gets all of this without a direct cost to taxpayers.”
A Win for Downtown (and Your Wallet)
Cool space, community vibes, and not a dime out of your pocket? Yeah, we’ll call that a downtown win.
