I'm not a sports follower whatsoever. However, when Celtics' coach Brad Stevens told reporters that his favorite Thanksgiving dish was a dessert his wife made called "Jello pretzel salad," it immediately caught my attention. Actually, it caught not only my attention but several users on Twitter were also taken aback. Now, I know what the words mean individually, but in that order, I have no clue.

According to Stevens, Jello pretzel salad has "a base of pretzels, something very unhealthy, and then jello and strawberries on top. It’s outstanding.”

Because my interest was piqued at the words "something very unhealthy" I knew I had to investigate. A quick search and I found images of this "Jello pretzel salad," and it was 100% not what I was expecting at all. It actually looks delicious. According to TheGirlWhoAteEverything.com:

"Jello Pretzel Salad is a family favorite for bbqs and potlucks. A buttery pretzel crust topped with a cream cheese and jello layer.  You can make this Jello Pretzel Salad with strawberries or raspberries. Either way, it's delicious."

That "something very unhealthy" stuff is cream cheese, kind of like a cheesecake layer. In fact, "salad" is probably not the right word to describe it, maybe just "cheesecake" is a better word than salad. It looks better than it sounds.

People who are aware of Jello pretzel salad agree that salad isn't the right word, it's "misclassified"

Whatever name you want to call it, I'm down to try it! The recipe actually looks simple (thanks, Pinterest!). I enjoy pretzels, cheesecake and strawberry Jello individually, now can you image them together? It'll probably be a taste explosion (so sorry, I've been watching Ratatouille too much thanks to Disney+). Check out the full recipe below thanks to TheGirlWhoAteEverything.com.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups pretzels (crushed fine)
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 6 oz pkg strawberry jello
  • 1 10 oz . pkg. frozen strawberries or small container (16 oz sliced fresh strawberries)
  • 1 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 8 ounces cool whip, thawed

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x13 pan.
  2. Combine pretzels, brown sugar, and melted butter and press into prepared pan for 10 minutes.
  3. Prepare jello according to directions and add the strawberries right before chilling. Refrigerate until partially set. *If it is not set enough it will leak through your cream cheese layer and make your pretzels soggy.
  4. Beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Fold in cool whip. Spread over cooled crust make sure you spread completely to the edges to create a seal so your jello doesn't leak through. Pour jello over cream cheese layer. Refrigerate.
