If you recently bought a home in Texas, there may be a check with your name on it due to a class action lawsuit.

Recent Texas Homebuyers May Be Eligible for Cash from $28.5 Million Real Estate Settlement

Texans who purchased residential real estate over the last few years may be entitled to financial compensation following a nationwide class-action lawsuit. Accoring to KCEN, real estate giants Keller Williams and RE/MAX agreed to a combined $28.5 million settlement to resolve allegations that major brokerages colluded to artificially inflate agent commission rates.

Allegations of Price Fixing

The legal challenge focused on the structure of real estate commissions, arguing that coordinated policies among major firms restricted competition. Plaintiffs alleged this collusion artificially inflated fee structures, effectively causing buyers to pay higher overall prices for residential properties. While Keller Williams and RE/MAX settled the dispute without admitting liability or unlawful conduct, the agreement establishes a reimbursement fund for qualifying consumers.

Eligibility Requirements for Texas Buyers

To qualify for a portion of the fund, Texas residents must meet specific criteria:

The residential property must have been purchased between January 25, 2019, and April 14, 2026.

The property must have been listed on a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) at the time of purchase.

Buyers who completed multiple qualifying home transactions during this timeframe must file individual claims for each separate property.

Uncertain Payout Amounts

Individual reimbursement amounts have not yet been determined. Final distribution figures will depend on the total volume of approved submissions, the purchase price of each home, and the total commission fees paid during each transaction.

Filing Deadline

You need to get a move on because the window to request compensation is rapidly closing. Eligible Texas buyers must complete and submit their official claim paperwork by the August 25 deadline. You can submit your documentation directly through the official Homebuyer Settlement Portal.
