First, it's the arrival of pumpkin this and pumpkin that. I've already seen it pop up in grocery stores and coffee shops. Pumpkin-flavored everything. From pumpkin spice lattes to the classic pumpkin pie, these seasonal delights start filling shelves and menus.

Then comes the West Texas Fair & Rodeo, an event that - to me - marks the transition from summer to fall. Not only do cowboys and cowgirls show off their skills, but families enjoy carnival rides and fantastic fair food. The sweet aroma of turkey legs hits the air, and you know for sure that fall has arrived in Texas.

High school football is another undeniable sign. The Friday night lights come to life, spotlighting young athletes as they battle it out on the field. So whether it's a pumpkin spice latte, the sights and sounds of the fair, or clashes under the Friday night lights, these are the signs to me that fall is in sight in west Texas. When it arrives, believe me, it’s going to be welcomed with open arms from this Texan.
