In light of the recent Texas floods that claimed dozens of lives, including the tragic loss of first responders who ran toward danger instead of away, I wanted to pause and honor our own heroes here in Abilene. These devastating events serve as a stark reminder of the risks our men and women in uniform face every single day.

Remembering the Heroes

From the early 1900s to modern times, Abilene has mourned the loss of officers who died in service. Traffic Officer James Edgar Jones lost his life in 1930 while trying to stop a traffic violator on his motorcycle. In 2017, Detective Elise Ann Ybarra was killed in a crash while traveling to a law enforcement conference dedicated to bettering her work.

Each name, each face, each story is a reminder of their unwavering courage.

Explore Their Stories

To honor these fallen heroes in Texas, we've gathered a gallery of photos and brief histories about each officer, detailing how they made the ultimate sacrifice in service. Please take a moment to learn their names. Remember their stories.
