FAA Grounds ALL Flights Over El Paso Texas and No One Knows Why Yet
Update 9:32 a.m.: According to FlightRadar24, as well as several news outlets, including AP News, the FAA has lifted the temporary airspace closure. AP News also reported that the Trump Administration cited that Mexican Cartel drones were tied to the closure.
Original Story
This might be the strangest aviation headline Texas has seen in a long time.
Late Tuesday night, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) abruptly shut down all flights to and from El Paso International Airport. I’m not talking about a few hours, not for a day, but for 10 full days, running through February 20.
Commercial jets, cargo planes, and private aircraft are all grounded within a 10-mile radius of airspace around El Paso and nearby Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Why Did the FAA Close El Paso Airspace?
Here’s the part that has everyone talking. The official FAA notice lists the reason only as “special security reasons.” That’s it. No threat details, no public briefing, and no clear explanation for travelers or local officials. That vague language is exactly why aviation communities like FlightRadar24 exploded overnight with questions, theories, and a lot of uneasy curiosity.

Not Your Normal Ground Stop
This is not a routine weather delay or short-term ground stop. The FAA has classified the area as restricted national defense airspace, meaning any aircraft that violates it could be intercepted, something you almost never see over a major airport that’s not military.
El Paso Travelers in Limbo
El Paso airport leaders say they’re in contact with federal officials, but even they’ve admitted they don’t have much more clarity than the rest of us. Meanwhile, airlines including Southwest, American, United, and Delta are canceling or rerouting flights, leaving thousands of travelers scrambling.
For now, the runway lights may be on, but the skies above El Paso are completely closed. And the biggest question remains: what exactly is going on in El Paso, Texas?
