Each week in Texas, more dogs end up on what’s called the Urgent List. That means their time at the shelter is almost gone unless someone steps in. The All Kind Animal Initiative has been sounding the alarm, and these pups can’t wait. They’re not just kennel numbers. They’re best friends in the making, with goofy grins, loyal hearts, and unconditional love ready to give.

Why the Crisis Keeps Growing

Shelters here in Abilene and across Texas are drowning in demand. There’s not enough room, not enough funds, and far too many dogs arriving at once. When space runs out, shelter staff are left making impossible choices no one wants to make. That’s why this “Urgent List” keeps getting longer, and why every single adoption or foster home matters.

Three Ways You Can Save a Life

  • Adopt: Give a dog the forever home they’ve been waiting for—safe, loved, and never alone again.
  • Foster: Even a short-term home opens up shelter space for another animal in need. You’re not just saving one life—you’re saving two.
  • Share: Spread the word on social media, text a friend, or tell a neighbor. One share can connect the right dog with the right person.

A Personal Plea To Adopt Or Foster Pups In Texas

When I scroll through those urgent lists, I don’t just see dogs, I see wagging tails, ears that perk up at a kind word, and eyes begging for a chance. Dogs give us loyalty, joy, and comfort without asking for much in return. The least we can do is show up for them.

LOOK: Here are the pets banned in each state

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
