Well… this was not on my Big Country bingo card this week.

The City Manager of Anson, Texas, which is just a short drive north of Abilene, has been arrested by the Department of Homeland Security, and the details are still about as clear as West Texas dust in a windstorm.

According to jail records, Ervin “Sonny” Campbell was taken into custody on Wednesday and booked into the Taylor County Jail right here in Abilene.

Campbell is reportedly being held without bond, which immediately raises eyebrows. That typically signals serious charges or a federal hold, and yes, this case involves federal authorities.

So far, officials have released almost no information about the alleged crimes.

And when Homeland Security is the agency making the arrest, you know this isn’t a parking-ticket situation.

Homeland Security Involvement Raises Big Questions

The Department of Homeland Security doesn’t usually step in for minor local issues. Their cases often involve things like major financial crimes, cyber activity, immigration violations, trafficking, or other federal offenses.

Important note: None of those have been confirmed in this case.

Right now, we simply don’t know what the accusations are, only that the investigation appears serious enough to involve federal agents.

Another Local Leadership Arrest Adds to the Shock

What makes this even more surreal? This comes shortly after a city manager in nearby Clyde was also arrested on unrelated charges, eventually resigning.

Two city leaders in neighboring communities getting hauled off within days of each other is… not exactly comforting news for the Big Country.

A Developing Story for the Abilene Area

As of now, the City of Anson has not released a detailed public statement, and federal authorities are staying tight-lipped.

Until then, folks across the area are left doing the same thing we are, trying to figure out what in the world just happened in Anson.
