Cypress Street in Downtown Abilene Gets Major Upgrade With New Trees
If you needed another reason to be proud of downtown Abilene, Texas, here you go: the City is rolling out 28 massive native Cedar Elm trees along Cypress Street, and yeah, it looks just as cool as it sounds.
The City of Abilene posted a behind-the-scenes video of the planting process on Facebook (seriously, it’s oddly satisfying), and it gives a front-row seat to how this next phase of downtown’s makeover is coming together.
Each tree stands around 35 feet tall, and crews will be planting them while they’re dormant over the next few weeks.

A Big Upgrade for Cypress Street in Downtown Abilene
This is all part of the Cypress Street Improvement Project, which has been quietly transforming the heart of downtown into a place people actually want to hang out. I’m talking walkable streets, cleaner design, better traffic flow, and now… real-deal shade. That will definitely rock when the temps attempt to boil us in the summer.
Cedar Elms are a smart pick, too. They’re native to Texas, tough enough for our “four seasons in one week” weather, and they grow into those wide, shady canopies we all fight over in July.
Future downtown lunch breaks just got a lot less sweaty.

The video shows crews in action, digging, setting, and lining up these trees, much like downtown’s getting a green upgrade package installed.
Downtown Abilene has come a long way over the years, and this is another solid reminder that the city is investing in making it not just functional, but actually cool to be in. More shade, better streets, better vibes.
Now if they could just plant one directly over my car in July and August… we’d really be onto something.
