6th Annual Backpack Giveaway in Abilene Texas Helps Hundreds of Local Kids

Back-to-school season in Texas hits a little differently when your community shows up big, and that’s exactly what Hearts BBQ does each year with their 6^th Annual Backpack Giveaway.

The event happens on the first Saturday in August at the Drug Emporium on Barrow Street. This event is truly by the community, for the community.

1300 Backpacks, One Big Heart

The goal? Fill and hand out 1,300 backpacks loaded with school supplies to local students in need. That’s a massive effort, and they’re calling on all of us to help. You can donate supplies or funds by visiting heartsbbqbackpackgiveaway.com or scanning the QR code in the flyer. Supplies and donations are due by July 25th, 2025.

More Than Backpacks

This family-friendly event also includes free snow cones, cotton candy, and bounce house fun courtesy of Zombie Cones, Garzilla’s Food Truck, and On The Go Rentals. Plus, Vitamins Plus is back, giving away free vitamins to keep kids healthy and ready to learn.

Volunteers Still Needed

Events like this don’t happen without volunteers. Whether it’s helping hand out supplies, managing lines, or simply spreading smiles, every helping hand makes a difference. If you're looking for a way to give back this summer, this is it.

Sharleene Jacques and her brother own Hearts BBQ, a food truck that has not only been serving the Abilene community with their amazing food but with their amazing hearts as well. Check out my interview with Sharleene in the player below.

What started with the two donating their tips to collect school supplies for needy children has gradually turned into an amazing event. In 2020, they were able to donate 30 backpacks. The next year, they donated 75 backpacks. In 2022, they donated a whopping 225 backpacks.
