A Group From California is in Abilene Protesting Circumcisions
If you were driving around the Catclaw/Southwest Drive area at lunch today, then you probably saw a group of protestors in white clothes with red stains on their crotch area.
Well, they are here to educate us about their issues with circumcisions.
First off, from what Chaz and I saw, these people were peacefully protesting as they walked the corner of Catclaw and Southwest Drive (by Wal-Mart). Nowadays, people lump all protestors in the same basket, so wanted to make that clear from the get-go.
Let me set the record straight. I am not a doctor nor do I play one on television, however, I have zero issues with circumcision or the lack thereof. However, when I see a sign that says "honk if you love foreskin", I'm gonna giggle for a second then write about it.
The group is named "Bloodstained Men & Their Friends" and are based out of Davis, California. According to social media, they've been traveling the southwest to spread their message about cutting off the ol' hood.
Again, I'm no doctor, but I really don't have an issue with the ol' snipperroonie in the nether regions, but I do have an issue with some of their "facts".
As we pulled up to the group, one young lady was kind enough to give me one of their info cards. Well, among their many claims is the statement that (due to circumcision) "function and sensation are always lost, but complications include excessive scarring, painful erections, skin bridges, loss of penile head or shaft, and even death!".
That first part is what really caught my eye as I'm circumcised and I'll tell ya, function and sensation are at the top of their respective games.
According to WebMD:
The use of circumcision for medical or health reasons is an issue that continues to be debated. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) found that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks, but the benefits are not great enough to recommend universal newborn circumcision.
Again, not a doctor, but I'd be willing to bet most doctors would abstain from (and even condemn) circumcisions if it meant the loss of penis or even death. Granted, you can choke from eating healthy cereal, so there's always a risk to anything we do.
Also, I totally understand not doing it for religious and/or cultural reasons, but I just can't wrap my head around this one. While I may be giggling like a little kid, I ain't mad. These people were protesting peacefully and even if I don't agree, the world keeps turning and no skin off my...uh, never mind.
I'm not sure how long this group will be in town, but while they've been here, they've been turning heads (instead of snipping them).
