Why Marvel Studios Succeeds (And How It Will Fail If It Doesn’t Diversify)

Guardians Of The Galaxy just enjoyed a very successful weekend at movie theaters, taking home around $94m, far in excess of expectations. The movie also stands at 92% positive reviews on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, joining all previous Marvel Studios movies in receiving predominantly favorable notices.

Marvel Studios is doing very well. In six years and ten movies, it has avoided both critical and commercial disasters, and frustrated naysayers who hailed the demise of the superhero movie at every step. Marvel's rivals at Fox, Sony Columbia, and Warner Bros, have enjoyed commercial success as well -- but not with the acclaim, consistency, or proliferation of Marvel. So how does Marvel do it, and can they keep doing it?

'Fantastic Four,' the rebooted film franchise coming from 'Chronicle' director Josh Trank, is busy filming with stars Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Miles Teller and Jamie Bell. The team is so busy, in fact, that they couldn't even make it to Comic-Con 2014 as no footage or images were officially ready to display. However, we might have just got our first look at 'Fantastic Four' anyway.

We've already heard about Disney's Marvel and Warner Bros.' ‘Fantastic Four’ Adds Tim Blake Nelson as Harvey “Mole Man” Elder

Though the major roles in the reboot of 'Fantastic Four' have been filled, the movie must do some world-building to set up the film's already dated sequel. So it's no surprise that Tim Blake Nelson is joining the cast of the film to play Harvey Elder, who will eventually (though not in the first film) become the Mole Man.

‘Fantastic Four’ to Be a ‘Chronicle’-Esque Coming-of-Age Origin Story

Remember that plot synopsis roaming the web a few months back stating the new 'Fantastic Four' reboot would imagine the crop of superheroes as government weapons? The ‘Fantastic Four’ Reboot May Feature “Doombots” Controlled by Doctor Doom

One of the great sins committed by the original 'Fantastic Four' movie was how badly it botched the character of Dr. Doom, one of the best and most iconic villains in the Marvel universe. The megalomaniacal dictator of Latveria is getting another chance on the big screen thanks to the upcoming reboot, where he'll be played by Toby Kebbell. While it's too early to actually judge this latest take on Doom in any way, some newly revealed tidbits automatically make him sound better than the previous iteration.

‘Fantastic Four 2′ and ‘Wolverine 3′ Dated for 2017, Along With a Mystery Marvel Movie

Twentieth Century Fox must be happy with 'Fantastic Four,' if the studio is already planning 'Fantastic Four 2,' right?

A rumor circulated recently claiming that Fox was looking to completely start over on the rebooted superhero film with an entirely new cast and crew, though we quickly debunked that one. To further prove how serious they are about their upcoming slate of Marvel movies, the studio set release dates for 'Fantastic Four 2,' 'Wolverine 3' and one untitled Marvel movie.

‘Fantastic Four’ Rumor Buster: Fox Has Fired the Director, Ditched the Script and Wants to Recast the Movie?

UPDATE: For what it's worth, we spoke to some high-level studio sources who flatly denied the below report and stated it's "not at all" true. Filming is still scheduled to begin on April 21 and Trank himself is on set right now.

The 'Fantastic Four' movie has not been without its hiccups, but few superhero movies are. We didn't think much of the troubles and when the cast was finally announced - Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell - we assumed it would be a fairly smooth ride to the start of production this summer. But, according to a shocking new report, Fox is looking to reboot it's reboot: they reportedly have fired director Josh Trank, thrown out the existing script and are looking to recast the movie.
