The clock is ticking down to the 2017 Academy Awards. With so few days and nights left before the big show, which of the nominees should you watch? That’s where our series, On Demand With ScreenCrush, comes in. Every two weeks, ScreenCrush Editor-in-Chief Matt Singer joins you to recommend three handpicked new titles you can watch at home right now from Movies on Demand. These are big new releases you won’t find streaming on Netflix, and the choices run the gamut from indie favorites, to major blockbusters, to insightful documentaries, and everything in between — all available with your remote.
Maybe it’s Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s the recent release of the kinky romance Fifty Shades Darker. Or maybe, if we’re being totally honest, it’s just something that’s always on our minds. Whatever the reason, the staff at ScreenCrush is obsessed with sex this week. So in the tradition of our lists on the best comedies, superheroes, sci-fi, horror, and romances of the past quarter century, let’s rank the 25 best sex scenes of the last 25 years.
In the tradition of ScreenCrush series like You Think You Know Movies and You Think You Know TV comes a new YouTube series: Top Five! Every two weeks (or so; we’ve got a lot of other stuff going on), ScreenCrush editor and critic Matt Singer will count down a particular topic from the world of movies (and probably write these introductory posts in the third person).
Of all the celebrity deaths in 2016, Carrie Fisher’s might hurt the worst. At 60 years old, she was still a young woman; she should have had many great performances, books, and scripts ahead of her. And with her recent work in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it seemed like she was finally getting her due as an actor, after years spent in the spotlight as an author and activist.
2016 is almost over! Hallelujah! With everything that’s happened in the last 12 months, we can’t wait to rip the last page of our 2016 Spider-Man wall calendar and hang up our 2017 Spider-Man wall calendar.
Our ongoing celebration of the year in cinema wouldn’t be complete without a few (or 1500) words about our favorite actors and actresses of the year. With the staff of ScreenCrush finalizing their lists of 2016’s best movies (you can already read Editor-in-Chief Matt Singer’s top ten here), we had to take a moment to celebrate the men and women who made the movies so memorable. And with some actors already breaking out of the pack and getting a lot of acclaim from critics groups and voting bodies, we decided to try to pick at least a couple names that aren’t popping up as frequently among the year-end awards. So we love you, Natalie Portman in Jackie and Mahershala Ali in Moonlight, but we decided to throw a little extra love some other performers’ way.
Decades after his death, Alfred Hitchcock is still considered one of the greatest directors of all time. But did you know that in addition to his reputation as the “Master of Suspense,” Hitchcock was also a notorious (no pun intended) prankster? He once bet someone they couldn’t spend the night in a darkened movie studio, chained to a camera. Once the man agreed to the bet, and got into position, Hitchcock offered him some brandy - laced with a laxative. That’s just one of the shocking facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!
