Relay for Life is  coming up next month so it's time to get your team together and start raising money for the American Cancer Society. This is an incredible event that I was a part of, for the first time, last year. I plan on making the 'survivor' lap again this year.Last year at Relay for Life I was only about 4 weeks post mastectomy and had just finished my first round of chemo the day before the walk. My boyfriends dad had just passed away from cancer as well. It was an emotional evening for all of us.

The evening starts out with the survivor lap and then continues with team members walking laps until the next morning. I had a cousin that passed away a few years ago from colon cancer and I remember how she talked about the Relay for Life event in her area. She loved it and made so many friends. It's a great way to celebrate, remember and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow cancer survivors and caregivers.

I think my favorite part of the night was the Luminaria Ceremony. Tea light candles are placed inside of personalized bags to symbolize shining a light on the fight against cancer. It's very moving, as everyone in the stadium becomes silent and walks a lap and finds the bag of their loved one.
