Garbage Possibly Releasing EP Later This Year

Garbage are ready to drop their new album ‘Not Your Kind of People’ next month, seven years after their previous studio record ‘Bleed Like Me.’ The band seems to be making up for lost time as they may release more material as 2012 progresses.

Garbage spoke to Billboard on a number of topics, including where they are headed creatively, issues with their label and more. Drummer Butch Vig says the Madison, Wisc.-based outfit worked on ”25 or 26 songs” for ‘Not Your Kind of People,’ with 11 of them ending up on the final tracklisting (15 if you count the deluxe edition). The leftover tracks could be collected for an EP or even a brand new Garbage album.

“We do want to finish a lot of these other songs,” Vig says. “There’s a week coming off coming up in May, so we might try to mix three or four more of the ones that didn’t get mixed yet. Since we’re our own label now we may just put out an EP later in the year or add some bonus tracks to the next single.”

The stickman continues: “I think we want everything to come out because I think there are some great songs that didn’t make the record. I think you’re going to see a lot more material coming out the next year or so, so fans should just keep their eyes on Facebook and our web site and there may be some surprises.”

As for the long gap between releases, Garbage say a lot of that had to do with their old label Geffen Records. The group claims Geffen never put much effort into marketing them after ‘Bleed Like Me’ was put out, and that frustration led to internal strife.

“We were just at odds with the whole [major label] system morally and intellectually,” frontwoman Shirley Manson explains. “We were stuck with a record label who didn’t give two flying s—s about us because they couldn’t get us on the radio. They were totally disinterested and washed their hands of us … We were constantly surrounded by such negativity that it just ends up eating away at the individuals in the band and we began to take it out on one another. It was not a good situation.”

Garbage will release their fifth studio album ‘Not Your Kind of People’ on May 14. They were recently forced to postpone a number of U.S. tour dates due to guitarist Duke Erikson having to fly overseas for a family emergency. You can see all the cities affected on the band’s official website.
