Fourth of July Events In and Around Abilene
The Fourth of July is just around the corner as firework stands are up and running, plans are being made for family and friends to get together and event organizers everywhere are planning for their annual fireworks display, all to celebrate our independence. With the day getting closer, let’s run down some Fourth of July events in Abilene.
Fireworks Display – Abilene
The 4th annual "WesTex Connect 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular" will be at Nelson Park on ES 11th near Loop 322 on Friday, July 4th. The fireworks are scheduled to start going off around 9:55pm. You can watch for free outside the VIP area or purchase a VIP package that includes one VIP parking pass and four VIP tickets that are each good for admission to the Zoo, seating in Festival Gardens (lawn chairs & blankets permitted), Sharon's Barbeque food and drink, plus Free Ride in Concert. 'Frontier Fourth' at Buffalo Gap Historic Village
'Frontier Fourth' takes place on July 4th, from 9am to 2pm and will feature a parade, community Jeep show, trail ride, games, crafts and more fun for the entire family. For more information, you can check out their Facebook page with the link below or call 325-572-3974.
Possum Kingdom Fireworks at Hell's Gate
Just a short drive from Abilene is Possum Kingdom Lake which will have a fireworks display at Hell's Gate on Saturday, July 5th. The activities get started at 6:30pm and goes until 10pm. View the firework show by boat on the water or enjoy watching the show from the YMCA Camp Grady Spruce - located at the end of Park Road 36. Admission is $5. Alcohol and pets are prohibited. Hillcrest Neighborhood July 4th Parade
This year marks the 18th Annual Hillcrest Neighborhood July 4th Parade, starting at 10am on July 4th. The public is welcome to participate in the parade, no livestock or horses allowed, however, bring your bikes , strollers, antique cars, roller skates, wagons or just sit and enjoy the parade. Afterwards everyone is invited to the Hillcrest church gym for homemade ice cream and cookies. For more information check out the church's website by clicking the link below.
The day starts off with a mud & grass volleyball tourney hosted by the AHS Volleyball Team. 4 person team @ $40 per team. Enjoy games (hotdogs eating, Tug-a-war & pie contests), booths through-out the day and music in the evening. Then later, the fireworks show at the Expo Center can be seen from The Place.

'Who Burnt The Beans' Cook-Off in Novice
The annual 'Who Burnt The Beans' Cook-Off will be held at the Novice ISD football field and cafeteria on Friday July 4th, and Saturday July 5th. Friday, there will be a fireworks display at dusk. Then, Saturday will be the cook-off starting at 10am. Entry fee for brisket, chicken and ribs is $100, while entry for beans, jalapeno poppers and salsa is $10. Boomfest Fireworks and Music at The Rocks
The Boomfest Fireworks and Music at The Rocks takes place the day before Independence Day on Thursday July 3rd from 6pm to 10:30pm north of Lake Hubbard. There will be live music, several vendors, and a professional fireworks show. People are encouraged to brink their lawn chairs. The event is an alcohol free event, and security will be on hand. Gates will open at 6pm with a $10 per car charge (proceeds to benefit Caddo Volunteer Fire Department). The event will be held at The North Park where CR 277 & CR 278 intersect, just north of the Hubbard Creek Dam. For more details, including driving directions, check out the link below.
VFW Post 6873 Fourth of July
The VFW Post 6873 will be hosting a family friendly Fourth of July party on Friday (July 4th) from 11am to 2pm. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and watermelon. Also there will be plenty of kid activities. The VFW is located at 1049 Veterans Drive right across from Dyess Air Force Base. For more information contact them at 325-692-1111.
BBQ Party at Your House
If you're not wanting to go anywhere at all, you can't go wrong with hanging out at the house and throwing down a big BBQ party. Throw on some steaks or burgers, get the beverages on ice and just hang with your family and friends.
