Cross Plains Classic 5k Run to Benefit the Local Cancer Fund is September 15th

The first annual Cross Plains Classic 5k is set for September 15th. This event is a run or walk  and there will also be a 1-mile walk option. All proceeds benefit the local Cross Plains Community Cancer Fund. If you per-register before September 1st, you’ll receive a T-shirt commemorating the event. There’s also a “Sleep-in” option. Check it out.

The West Texas Fair and Rodeo is Coming to Abilene

 

The 2012 West Texas Fair and Rodeo begins Thursday, September 6th, with the traditional Sneak-a-Peak night and will run through Saturday, September 15th. This year fair goers can purchase a ‘Seasons Pass’ that’s good for the duration of the Fair and Rodeo. Some crowd favorites are back this year, like the Tractor Pull competition, the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack show and of course all the entertainers on the Outdoor stage.

The Farm Bill and Drought to be Main Focus at Abilene Wheat Conference

The Big Country Wheat Conference will be held August 23rd at the Taylor County fair grounds, 1982 Lytle Way in Abilene. The Farm Bill will affect most all West Texans, as most farmers and ranchers try to figure out the challenges the new ‘Farm Bill’ will bring. The drought conditions are also top-of-mind for most area farmers And ranchers. If you’d like to attend the event, there is no registration fee for those who preregister by August 17th.

The Cross Plains public library was one of 78 libraries in America, chosen to participate in the ‘Big Read’ program. The library is set to receive an endowment for the arts. The ‘Big Read’ is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore and promote reading in America.

The National Day of the American Cowboy Will Be Celebrated This Saturday at the Fort Worth Stockyards

Saturday is the National Day of the American Cowboy (NDAC) and will be celebrated all over the Lone Star State. The closest place to Abilene holding a big celebration is the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. Most all activities associated with the NDAC at the Fort Worth Stockyards will be free, with only a few exceptions.
