At this time of the year, it's hard to determine what the weather is going to bring to Texas as far as temperatures. One day might be cold and dreary, while the next day is sunny and 75. To say Mother Nature is a little bipolar this time of year is an understatement.

Even though it can be hard to tell how the weather will be, your grass knows when it's time to wake up. More than likely (depending on when you are reading this) your grass is still brown and you may have some weeds popping up to let you know they're awake and ready to party.

The time to start handling your yard business is now.

Yes, even though the grass is not green yet, preparing your soil and using a pre-emergent for weeds is crucial. If you wait too long to get started, weeds are liable to take over your yard quickly and not allow your grass the nutrients it needs to wake up.

Bermuda Lawn Care in Texas

  • Mid To Late February or Early March (Temps 50-60 degrees) - Time to put some pre-emergent down. You can also use a light fertilizer like a 10-10-10 to help when the grass wakes up. This is also the time you can put down a soil treatment.
  • Mid To Late March (Temps 50-70 degrees) - Time to put down a strong fertilizer.
  • Once Grass Starts To Emerge - It's time to scalp your yard on the lowest mower setting you can have. This helps get the old brown grass up and avoid any thatching.

When my wife and I first brought our house, we used a service to come out and take care of our lawn. They did ok, but I felt like I could do just as good of a job, if not better. So with the help of my dad, who's a Texas Master Gardener, as well as some research, I started working on my own lawn.

One thing that has helped me is that I follow this guy's website called How To With The Doc. Doc is a Marine Corps veteran and a jack of all trades including a lawn expert. You should see this dude's videos of the lawns he takes care of. Incredible.

Since I've been using Doc's methods, my lawn has never looked better. (No, I'm not getting paid to say that.) Check out Doc's free lawn guide as well as his recommended products to get your lawn looking sharp this year.
