Texas Lottery Rules Are Changing: What Every Player Needs to Know Before September
With September just days away, there is big news for folks who play the Texas Lottery, as your ticket-buying game is about to change. Starting September 1, 2025, the Lone Star State is cracking down, and let’s just say, convenience is taking a little vacation.
What Changes Are Coming To The Texas Lottery?
First up: online tickets? Gone. That’s right, no more grabbing scratch-offs or Powerball entries from your couch. If you want to play, it’s boots on the ground at a Texas store. Apps and third-party courier services? Poof. Outta here.

So what about the “I’ll buy one for my buddy” loophole? Yep, that will also be gone. The law now bans buying tickets for anyone else. Try it, and you could be facing a Class A misdemeanor and have to fork over up to $4,000 in fines or a year in jail. Not exactly the jackpot you were hoping for.
Could the Texas Lottery Be Gone By 2029?
Check this out: the law includes a review process that could kill the Texas lottery entirely by 2029. Yeah, they might just pull the plug on your favorite pastime. But then again, it might make things faster at the checkout line. Lord knows it’s frustrating to get behind someone buying a ton of scratch-offs.
The lottery in Texas has been a guilty pleasure for millions, from scratch-offs at the gas station to waiting on that Powerball draw with bated breath. Now, it’s a little less convenient, a little riskier, and a whole lot more “do it yourself.” But hey, that’s Texas for you: go big, or go home.
