Texas Highways Rank Among The Most Dangerous In The Nation
If your daily drive involves a Texas state highway, you might want to loosen your grip on that steering wheel… then tighten it right back up.
A new study analyzing five years of U.S. fatal crash data (54,447 crashes total) identified the 30 most dangerous state highways in the country, ranking roads by the number of deadly crashes tied to each highway and state combination.

The research was conducted by iSelect and paints a pretty wild picture of where things go sideways the most, especially in Texas.
Texas State Highways Ranked Among the Most Dangerous in the U.S.
Texas didn’t just sneak onto the list; we said “hold my beer” and kicked the door in.
Here are the Texas highways that ranked in the national top 30:
- SR-6 – 113 fatal crashes (Rank #8)
- SR-71 – 87 crashes (Rank #11)
- SR-105 – 69 crashes (Rank #25)
- SR-36 – 69 crashes (Rank #26)
- SR-16 – 68 crashes (Rank #27)
- SR-21 – 68 crashes (Rank #28)
These roads run through a mix of major cities, rural stretches, and heavy truck traffic zones. In other words, fast speeds, long drives, and way too many “I’ll just check this text real quick” moments.
Texas Ranked As One of the Most Dangerous States to Drive
The study also ranked overall state danger using crash risk, weather risk, and road infrastructure. Texas came in at #2 most dangerous state to drive, just behind Mississippi.
Our biggest issue? Infrastructure risk. Which tracks when half the state is under construction, and the other half is growing faster than Buc-ee’s snack aisle.
What’s Up With Texas Drivers?
Most of these crashes come from the same usual suspects: speeding, distracted driving, impairment, fatigue, and skipping the seatbelt. None of that is exotic or complicated; it’s everyday stuff we actually control.
So yeah… get where you’re going. Just don’t turn your commute into something Netflix turns into a six-part series.
