Why Outlaws & Legends in Abilene Feels Like a Giant Texas Tailgate Party

I’ll admit it, when we launched 92.5 The Ranch in Texas, I walked in as a full-tilt rock guy who knew Willie, Hank, and Alabama… but not much beyond that. My natural habitat has always been distorted guitars, loud drums, and the occasional eardrum damage courtesy of Rock 108.

Then Outlaws & Legends Happened

Somewhere between backstage hangs, dust clouds, and ice-cold drinks in the Texas sun, I got pulled into this Red Dirt world, and honestly, I’m glad I did. A lot of that is thanks to festival founder Mark Powell. What started as a radio connection turned into a legit friendship, and seeing the passion he pours into this event made it impossible not to get invested.

This Ain’t a Polished Country Show It’s a Texas Throwdown

If you’ve never experienced Outlaws and Legends Music Fest, don’t picture some quiet lawn concert where people politely clap. Think: tailgate party meets rock show meets family reunion where everybody brought coolers… and nobody wants to go home.

It’s loud and proud. It’s rowdy. It’s totally Texas.

And the whole thing benefits the incredible kids at Ben Richey Boys Ranch, so yeah, you can raise a little hell for a really good cause.

Over the years, I went from “rock dude visiting country land” to someone who genuinely cranks this stuff up. My playlist goes from Metallica, Pantera, and Lamb of God, to Mark Powell, Kevin Fowler, and Roger Creager.

When ZZ Top Shows Up, Rock 108 Is Obviously Crashing the Party

This year’s lineup is stacked… and the big crossover moment? ZZ Top headlining. That’s right, that little old band from Texas is invading a Red Dirt playground. Suddenly, my Rock 108 world and The Ranch world collide in the best possible way.

Trust me… seeing a sea of cowboy hats losing their minds to those legendary riffs is something special.
