I got a Texas-sized treat this week on The Weekend Buzz as I was fortunate enough to interview Blues legend, Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

Thirty years ago, a kid from Shreveport grabbed a Fender Strat, plugged into the blues, and somehow made it cool again during the peak of grunge. Now, Kenny Wayne Shepherd is revisiting the album that launched his career with Ledbetter Heights (The 30th Anniversary Sessions), and honestly, hearing him talk about it felt like sitting around swapping stories with an old rock buddy who just happens to melt faces on guitar.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Is Revisiting the Album That Changed Everything

During our conversation, Kenny talked about going back and re-recording Ledbetter Heights, the same album he made while still balancing high school classes and recording sessions in Memphis. That still blows my mind. Most of us at 16 were trying to survive geometry class. Kenny was out there helping drag blues-rock back into the mainstream.

What’s cool is this isn’t just some lazy anniversary cash grab. Kenny said revisiting these songs gave him a chance to approach them with more experience, more emotion, and honestly…more swagger. The fire is still there, but now it’s got 30 years of road miles behind it.

The ‘90s Guitar Tone Is Alive and Well

One of the coolest parts of our interview was hearing Kenny talk about using his original 1995 guitar rig for the new recordings. That’s basically the blues-rock equivalent of firing up a classic muscle car that still growls as it did decades ago.

And yes…we absolutely talked gear, road stories, Texas crowds, and how weird it is seeing younger generations discovering blues-rock through TikTok and YouTube clips.

Blues, Rock, and a Whole Lot of Nostalgia

The craziest part? Kenny still sounds hungry. After touring with legends like B.B. King, Eric Clapton, and The Rolling Stones, he still talks about the blues like a guy chasing it for the first time.

Check out our full interview below and prepare to immediately want to dust off an old guitar you haven’t touched since the Bush administration.
