If you love eggs for breakfast and always wanted to have your own flock of chickens but aren't too sure where to get started there might be an answer. The Texas A&M  AgriLife Extension Service is hosting a webinar series for novice chicken raisers for a week.

This webinar series is free to those wishing to attend and is being presented by a certified specialist in chickens. Ph.D Gregory Archer is an Agrilife Extension poultry specialist and is also an associate professor in the Texas A&M Department of Poultry Science at the Bryan-College Station campus. The reason for the webinar series is due to the pandemic and increasingly huge amount of people were interested in chickens due to the rising egg prices.

While this webinar series is free you do have to pre-register in advance if you want to participate. The webinar will go over the basics when it comes to raising chickens but also for people that have had years of experience to maybe learn something new. This week long series will start on March 18 and cover a wide array of topics; that list can be found below.

  • March 18, Introduction, Housing and Lighting.
  • March 19, Breeds and Nutrition.
  • March 20, Selling Eggs and Poultry, Food Safety.
  • March 21, Health and Disease.
  • March 22, Chickens, Your Garden and the Environment.

There are many different factors to consider when raising chickens such as which breeds will do well in the Texas heat and cold temperatures. While environment is a factor, especially if you have a green thumb there are also microscopic things to think about that Ph.D Gregory Archer will fully explain to all attendees.

The webinar will be from 11 a.m. to noon for the week but for those that are too busy can watch the recordings from the series if they still register. To register for the Spring 2024 Backyard Chicken Seminar Series click here.
