Texas Realtor Fired After Posting Herself Making An ‘Elon Musk Salute’
In case you were wondering if the "Elon Musk Salute" would fly at your workplace, the answer is "probably not."
One Texas realtor learned the hard way that the gesture, which many equated with a Nazi salute, can and will get you fired in Texas.
In case you missed Musk's salute, or want to review the footage, here it is:
The realtor identified as Yessica Garza was let go from RD Realty after a social media "firestorm," according to SA Current. RD Realty also took to social media to address and denounce Garza's emulation of Musk's gesture:
Members of social media had plenty of critiques for Yessica's video accusing her of "white alignment" and highlighting the irony of a Hispanic person making a gesture popularized by the infamously racist Nazi party.
"People to which you currently pander will be the first to wrongfully call ICE on you."
Following the backlash, Garcia shut off commenting on the post and made her account private. Unfortunately for her, plenty of people, like the person above, have it saved for posterity.
Does This Really Matter?
You may be thinking "It was just a joke" as I'm sure Garcia thought, too. However, real estate has been a tool of racial oppression for decades- from segregation, racial "steering" and discrimination in lending.
It is because of this fraught history that the National Real Estate Code of Ethics mentions "race" six times.
As a professional realtor, Garcia honestly should have known better. So even if it was "just a joke" it was a highly unprofessional one- and do you really want to work with someone like that?
