Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

The song by Alan Jackson paints a vivid picture of what happened over twenty years ago on September 11, 2001.

Almost anyone over the age of 30 remembers exactly what they were doing when the news reports blanketed all of the television broadcasts. I was in the process of conducting an on-air interview on KICKS 105 radio with representatives from the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce.

Like so many others watching the live coverage, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. How could a huge jet have such a terrible technical issue that would lead it to crash into a New York skyscraper?

My confusion and disbelief transitioned to intense sadness and anger when the second tower was hit. Realizing that terrorism was the force behind this tragedy, my heart sank. I knew that a new world order was unfolding before my eyes.

Standing At Ground Zero

In the Spring of 2023, my wife and I took our first-ever trip to New York City. We visited many of the main tourist attractions while we were there.

We stood on the Brooklyn Bridge, went to the top of the Rockefeller Building, took in a Broadway Show, and saw Times Square. We even sat at the exact same table as John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale did in the movie Serendipity (which was also filmed in 2001).

However, it was the tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum that impacted me the most during our visit to NYC.

Even though I watched all of the events of that terrible day unfold in real time 22 years ago, standing at Ground Zero brought forth a deeper understanding of that day.

If you ever get the chance to visit New York City, I highly encourage you to visit the 9/11 Memorial. Pictures can not capture what you will experience in person, but I have compiled some of the photos I took while I was there.

The most moving photo, at least to me, was this plaque on the huge wall of the Reflection Room. Friends and families of those who perished are allowed behind this wall to reflect on the loss of their loved ones
