I had something pretty heavy happen to me over the long holiday weekend. It sure reminded me of the importance of driving safely on the Winters Freeway in Abilene. The whole incident, which could have resulted in a serious accident, is a reminder for all drivers to be safe and courteous on the road.

I must admit, I was angered. I had loved ones in the car with me. Should something ever happen to them because of someone else's dangerous stupidity, that's when things get very real. What better platform to share some frustrations than an open letter? Whether the driver ever reads it is anyone's guess, but at least my message gets out there.

Dear Reckless Driver,

I'm writing you about a recent incident involving your red Dodge pickup truck, which nearly caused several accidents on the Winters Freeway in Abilene. As driver of one of the vehicles you almost hit, you've got to know how your actions could have resulted in some major heartbreak for a bunch of people.

On the day of the incident, I personally witnessed your pickup truck engaging in reckless behavior that put the lives of other drivers at risk. Your vehicle was weaving in and out of lanes, exceeding by far the posted speed limit, and exhibiting erratic driving behavior. You came within inches of clipping the front of my car.

I understand we all have moments of frustration or even medical emergencies on the road. This was different. You need to know that what you did directly impacted the well-being of others.

I urge you to reflect on this. Take it as a wake-up call.

Actually, this whole experience is a great reminder for all of us. There's no reason to act like a fool behind the wheel. Respect those traffic laws, stick to speed limits, and show a little patience when on the road. We all have loved ones we want to get home to. Your actions can bring on positive change and contribute to safer streets in Abilene.

Most laws in Texas are upfront and without question. Some, on the other hand, are lesser known, so here's a refresher.
