Leaping Lizards, Say Hello To My Little Texas Friend

Picture walking into your cozy home, only to notice tiny unexpected visitors scurrying around your tile and walls. You're not alone. It's exactly what I've been up against lately. House lizards, baby variety. These miniature reptiles might be small, but having them around can be quite a surprise unless you know what's what.

These baby house lizards, also known by some as geckos, are harmless and even helpful to have around. These roommates earn their keep by munching on insects like mosquitoes and flies, keeping your living space relatively bug-free.

The little guy above was recently spotted in my house and affectionately named "Thin Lizzy".  Sometimes you'll catch them perched on a wall, their little feet clinging as they patiently wait for their next snack to fly by.

However helpful their intentions may be, their sudden appearance can still give you a startle. After all, I really don't want to live in a reptile house.

The best way to deal with these unexpected houseguests is through prevention and gentle encouragement. Do what I did and make sure any gaps or cracks in your home's walls and windows are sealed to limit entry points. You can also use natural repellents like citrus peels or eucalyptus oil, which I've heard lizards tend to avoid.

When you find these baby lizards indoors, gently guide them outside using a soft cloth or cardboard. These guys are not only harmless but also sensitive creatures, so be sure to use a gentle touch.

I get it that their appearances might give you a startle, and even be a little creepy, but take comfort in knowing that they're doing their part to keep your home free of insects.
