I've seen them a bunch during my travels lately. If you've been in the Lone Star State for any amount of time at all, I'm sure you've seen them too. I'm talking about the huge metal stars on barns or as decoration on houses.

What's the deal with all of these stars anyway? Does everybody have the same decor idea? Surely there's some meaning behind it. It turns out there actually is a reason you see them everywhere. Wide Open Country knows about southern living in big spaces and explains the history of the metal stars in their article.

These stars are also known as primitive stars and they have both historical and cultural meanings. They originated in the United States, mainly in farming communities. These stars symbolize different things. One common meaning is that they represent good luck and protection for the homestead and its occupants. It was believed that the star's points would ward off evil spirits and bring blessings to the land and its crops. The barn stars became known as "hex signs", derived from the word hexewhich means "witch" in German.

Barn stars can be traced back to the 18th century when German immigrants, known as Pennsylvania Germans, settled in America. They were skilled metalworkers who brought their knowledge to their new homeland. Part of their craft was decorative metalwork, including large stars, which they displayed on their barns.

Initially, these barn stars were made from leftover materials like tin or iron. Once the stars were made they were painted in vibrant colors like red, blue, or black. The hanging of these stars has become popular in other farming regions, including the Midwest and here in Texas.

The color of these stars also holds significance. A brown star means friendship. Black and blue stars are said to bring protection. Green stars signify fertility and growth on the farm, and a white star stands for purity.

I knew there was something going on here. These stars are seen in too many places to just be a fad. I just thought that if you're considering hanging one up for yourself, it's interesting to know the meaning behind it. Some call it superstition, others swear by its protection. Either way, may it bring you peace and happiness.

We love our stars in Texas. We even have a massive star-shaped house. Scroll below to see the inside pictures of this architectural marvel.
