Remembering Oscar: The Heart Behind Abilene’s Beloved Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant

The story of Oscar Zamora Avila, affectionately known to many as simply Oscar, is one of dreams, family, food, and an enduring love for his community. Born on January 8, 1953, in Ranger, Texas, coincidentally sharing a birthday with Elvis Presley, Oscar was not just a celebrated business owner but also a dear friend to many, including myself. Little did most know, Oscar was a devoted Elvis fan with an impressive private Elvis collection, a testament to his lively spirit and eclectic passions.

From Oil Fields to Family Recipes: The Birth of a Dream

Oscar began his career in the oil industry, but his true dream was to own a restaurant. That dream took shape when he met and married Leticia Avila, a native of Mexico. Leticia’s home cooking, with its rich and authentic flavors, convinced Oscar that his dream could become a reality. Together, they embarked on a journey to open Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant on Abilene’s north side, offering real Mexican food made from lifelong Mexican family recipes.

In their cozy restaurant, Oscar’s charisma was as much a draw as the delicious dishes prepared by Leticia and her family in the kitchen. From tamales to tacos, burritos to enchiladas, Oscar’s quickly became a favorite destination for Abilene and West Texas residents seeking authentic Mexican flavors.

A Legacy of Love and Generosity

Oscar was not just a restaurateur, he was a pillar of the community. Whether supporting local charities, churches, civic organizations, or non-profits, he gave back to the community that had embraced his dream. His generosity and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Sadly, Oscar passed away during the height of the COVID pandemic two years ago, a loss that deeply shook his family, friends, and the countless patrons who came to love him and his restaurant. While the pandemic is a chapter many wish to forget, Oscar’s story reminds us of the irreplaceable people we’ve lost along the way.

Celebrating 20 Years of Flavor and Family

This past Saturday, Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant celebrated its 20th anniversary—a bittersweet milestone. The celebration featured the dishes we’ve come to love: sizzling fajitas, flavorful enchiladas, tamales, and Oscar’s famous borracho beans (or "drunk beans" usually made after an evening of drinking). Although Oscar is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in every bite prepared by Leticia and her family, who continue to honor his vision.

The Man Behind the Recipes

Oscar had a favorite meal, Leticia’s green chili secret sauce enchiladas, and a sweet tooth for her homemade German chocolate cake, a treat she made exclusively for him. His love for good food and good company was at the heart of everything he did, whether sharing stories over a plate of enchiladas or lending a hand to someone in need.

A Friend and Partner, Forever Remembered

Oscar was more than a business owner to me, he was a dear friend and potential business partner. We were just beginning to embark on a venture together when he was admitted to the hospital. While that dream never came to fruition, I cherish the memories we shared and the impact he had on our community.

A Legacy That Lives On

Though Oscar is no longer with us, Leticia and her family continue to uphold his dream, serving the authentic, heartfelt recipes that have defined Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant for two decades. As we celebrate this milestone, let us remember the man whose love for food, family, and community made it all possible. Oscar Avila may be gone, but his legacy remains in every plate served and every life he touched.

Oscar, you are deeply missed, but your dream lives on in Abilene and beyond. Thank you for the memories, the meals, and the love you poured into everything you did.
