Texas AMBER Alerts Save Lives, But Only If We Pay Attention
I’ll be honest, my chest tightened and my eyes filled with tears as I read this. Every single time I hear about a child being taken, my mind goes to the same dark question: How could someone do this to a child?

As men, as parents, as Texans, we have to say it out loud. This has to stop. And one of the most powerful tools we have to protect children is something many of us have learned to ignore: the AMBER Alert.
Why AMBER Alerts Matter in Texas
When a Texas AMBER Alert is issued, it isn’t random. It triggers an immediate, coordinated response involving local law enforcement, Texas DPS, and federal partners. Time matters. Minutes matter. And public awareness can make the difference between a child being rescued or something far worse.
Texas DPS says these alerts are designed to mobilize all of us, not just officers in patrol cars, to be extra alert, observant, and ready to act.
The Tragic Story Behind the Name “AMBER”
The AMBER Alert system is named after Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old Texas girl abducted while riding her bike in Arlington in 1996. She was later found murdered just miles from her home.
This year marks 30 years since Amber’s death, and her legacy has saved countless lives across Texas and the nation. That alone should stop us in our tracks.
How Texans Can Help When an Alert Goes Out
When an alert pops up on your phone, a highway sign, TV, or social media, don’t swipe it away. Read it. Look around. Remember the description of the child, suspect, or vehicle.
If something feels familiar, call 911 immediately. You’re not bothering anyone. You could be saving a life.
Texas Uses More Than Just AMBER Alerts
Texas DPS manages several emergency alerts, including Silver Alerts, Blue Alerts, Endangered Missing Person Alerts, Active Shooter Alerts, and more. Each exists for one reason: public safety and rapid response.
This Is a Call to Action
I hate writing stories like this. I hate that they’re necessary. But pretending it doesn’t happen doesn’t protect children, paying attention does.
If you’re a parent, an uncle, a grandfather, or just a decent human being, take AMBER Alerts seriously. Because one day, it might be your child everyone is looking for.
